In May, we attended RFID Journal LIVE! 2016 located in Orlando, Florida. While we were there, we interviewed manufacturers, solutions providers, and industry speakers in hopes of learning more about the new products and applications currently emerging in the RFID industry. In this interview, we spoke with Michael Fein, Senior Product Manager, RFID and Altaf Mulla Director of Product Management & Business Development, Zebra Technologies.
Zebra, one of the biggest names in RFID, is bringing new products and concepts to the market year after year. A huge presence at RFID Journal LIVE, Zebra introduced a new printer, the Silverline Solution, and a new UHF RFID handheld sled, the RFD 8500. Michael and Altaf took us through the huge booth this year and explained in detail about their two newest RFID products.
The new Silverline Printer Solution is a joint venture with Confidex that prints and encodes all three new, on-metal Silverline tags. The Silverline, Silverline Slim, and Silverline Micro are tags developed by Confidex that can read on metal and on liquid with a general read range of between 1 and 5 meters, depending the tag and asset. These three tags are some of the only tags that can perform well on liquid-filled items, making them extremely popular for healthcare and asset tracking applications. These tags cannot be printed on by normal RFID printers because they are thicker due to the added material to enable on-metal reading. Because these labels work on most all surfaces, they were envisioned as a complete asset tracking tag solution for companies that want one tag for various assets.
The Silverline Printer is a custom ZT410 RFID Printer calibrated and set up for thick labels like the Silverline RFID labels. The ZT410 is one of the best RFID printers on the market, and the new Silverline version is no different. This printer is one of only a handful on the market that can actually print on-metal labels.
The RFD 8500 is Zebra’s new UHF RFID sled is compatible with mobile devices, tablets, and smartphones with a max read distance of 20+ feet. This sled is unique in that it can read up to 40,000+ tags and/or 500 barcodes, and store the reads without a connected smart device. Though typically used with a smart device, the RFD 8500 has one of the fastest tag reads of any handheld reader on the market of about 600+ tags per second. It also has a proprietary antenna with omnidirectional read range and a fast and easy application development protocol called ZETI. This handheld was developed for inventory, asset management, warehouse, and healthcare applications and environments. It can be purchased with or without a 2D imager and charging cradle, and has several device mount options for versatility.
