Scot Stelter, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Impinj, gave us an in-depth tour of their expo booth at RFID Journal LIVE! 2013. Scot showed us their “Best in Show” winner, the Speedway xArray RFID reader system and gave us a demonstration of some of their RFID equipment.
We started the tour with a quick look at the xArray RFID reader system. Impinj’s new product is a phased array reader typically mounted in the ceiling where it would be used to constantly monitor inventory and assets. At the show, Impinj demonstrated the xArray’s functionality by monitoring the movements of Impinj employees in and around the booth in real time. The system is perfect for situations where a real-time location system is desired while still avoiding the high cost of active RFID tags.
When the reader is mounted at a height of 15 ft., its range reaches a 40 ft. diameter. The system monitors passive UHF RFID tags offering dramatic cost savings when compared to an active tagging system. While the current application of the system is in retail, the Speedway xArray RFID reader will be extremely beneficial in deployments across many industries and applications including general asset tracking, resort hospitality, and healthcare.
Next, we looked at the Indy RS500 Reader SiP (system in package) which is an embeddable, integrated reader solution. Designed in a small package ideal as a surface mount technology component, the RS500 only needs power, UART communication, and an RFID antenna to start reading RFID tags. The low-cost and agility of the Reader SiP establishes it as a prime candidate to be used in a wide range of applications including access control, interactive kiosks, low-cost handheld readers, and more. The small form factor and functionality earned the Indy RS500 Reader SiP a “Best in Show” nomination at RFID Journal LIVE! 2013.
Also, Impinj debuted the newest iteration of their Source Tagging Platform (STP). The Impinj STP enables scalable source tagging by allowing users to create a cost-effective and high speed system like the one seen at Kirk-Rudy.
