In May, we attended RFID Journal LIVE! 2016 located in Orlando, Florida. While we were there, we interviewed manufacturers, solutions providers, and industry speakers in hopes of learning more about the new products and applications currently emerging in the RFID industry. In this interview, we spoke with Dr. David Evans, Managing Director, Technology Solutions (UK) Ltd.
Technology Solutions (UK) LTD. or TSL, is one of our newer partners that we actually met at RFID Journal LIVE! back in 2014. TSL has been designing, manufacturing, and supporting their full line of RFID readers in-house since 1993. TSL’s unique line of UHF RFID readers are designed as modular devices, allowing the user to mix and match different accessories in order to create their perfect reader. All of TSL’s UHF readers are host device agnostic because they can be used with any operating system. This year, we took another look at the 1128 and 1153, as well as their newest reader, the 1166.
1128 Bluetooth™ UHF RFID Reader
The 1128 Bluetooth™ UHF RFID Reader, like all of TSL’s UHF readers, uses Bluetooth™ to connect to different host devices from manufacturers like Microsoft, Android, or Apple. This handheld reader has a circularly polarized antenna and the option of including a 2D barcode scanner as well. All TSL products have a large range of device mounts to choose from, making these readers extremely flexible solutions. The 1128 handheld reader weighs less than a pound and has a max read distance of up to 4 meters.
1153 Bluetooth™ UHF RFID Reader
The TSL 1153 Bluetooth™ UHF RFID Reader is a wearable device designed to read tags while allowing the user to remain fully dexterous. Features like a circularly polarized antenna, optional 2D barcode scanner, and read range of up to 2 meters makes this reader perfect for manufacturing or inventory tracking applications. All TSL products use the TSL ASCII protocol that sits on top of the native API of Class 1 Gen 2, and is easy to use across all of their devices.
1166 Bluetooth™ UHF RFID reader
The new 1166 Bluetooth™ UHF RFID reader is an extremely rugged device that has an IP rating of 67. Compared to the 1128, this device has an increase in performance and run time – up to 10 hours of continuous usage. Perfect for applications in harsh environments like yard management and distribution centers, the 1166 uses a circularly polarized antenna and has an increased read range of up to 6 meters.
All three of these TSL readers have an embedded SD card capable of storing millions of tag reads – each of which are dated and time stamped automatically for convenience. Additionally, TSL has a few apps on the Apple, Android, Google Play, and Microsoft Stores for users to download and get started reading and writing RFID tags.
