In May, we attended RFID Journal LIVE! 2016 located in Orlando, Florida. While we were there, we interviewed manufacturers, solutions providers, and industry speakers in hopes of learning more about the new products and applications currently emerging in the RFID industry. In this interview, we spoke with Terry Pruett, Senior Director, Channels, of Alien Technology.
It is always fun to visit the Alien Technology booth at RFID Journal LIVE. Not only do they have a huge booth filled with the latest products, but we get to visit with Terry Pruett who is equally as knowledgeable as he is entertaining. The main reason we visited the Alien booth this year at the show was to learn about three of the newest products: the ALR-F800, ALR-H450, and their new IC – Higgs-EC.
Alien F800 RFID Reader
The first product that we discussed was the ALR-F800. While we were filming, the demo units were all being used, but we were still able to learn a lot about the new fixed reader from Terry. Nicknamed “The Integrator’s Reader,” the new F800 was released just before the show in May. It is a four-port, small form factor, UHF RFID reader with a transmit power of up to 31.5 dBm. The F800 is able to load applications and code directly on the reader, and features a USB slot for additional capabilities such as cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth© connectivity.
Alien ALR-H450 Handheld RFID Reader
Crowds of people were drawn to the Alien booth to see the ALR-H450, which was released at the show. The ALR-H450 is a new Android handheld UHF RFID reader that can read up to 30+ feet thanks, in part, to a high-performance 4 dBic circular antenna. A powerful processor, 1D and 2D barcode scanner, GPS, Bluetooth, and 3G connectivity are some of the major features. What stood out the most about this handheld reader is that 30+ feet read range compared to similar devices on the market that only read about 20 to 25 feet. The incredible price point of $1599 for the reader, two batteries, the power supply, and charging and data cradle makes this reader perfect for low-cost deployments.
Alien IC Higgs-EC
Alien is one of the few companies in the RFID industry that manufactures readers, antennas, and tags – and even the chips, or ICs, inside the tags. The newest chip that Alien has released is the Higgs-EC, manufactured with Error Correction (EC) that helps to eliminate bit flipping. Bit flipping is a problem that occasionally occurs in damaged or hacked RFID tags. Bit flipping occurs during the reading or writing of a tag and results in an inverted bit value, either the bit is a “1” and reads/writes a “0” or vice versa.
The Higgs-EC IC is currently available in three tags: the Garment Tag, Squigglette, and the Squiggle. This new IC not only has this unique Error Correcting capability, but also has amazing read and write sensitivities of -22.5 dBm and -19 dBm, respectively.
